Wind Technik Nort at North East Midlands Airport

CASE STUDY 250kw WIND TECHNIK NORD EAST MIDLANDS AIRPORT

Two  250kw Wind Technik Nord wind generator have recently been installed at East midlands Airport. We will keep posting on the www.windturbine.ltd.uk site the data from production.

Blade/ Rotor is 13.4m with a diameter of 30m and has a swept area of 707m2 with an rpm of 40.
The hub is made of casted steel GGG40.3 and mounted to the rotor shaft.
Main Shaft is forged high grade alloy steel to transfer all forces and moments to the frame and gear.
Gearbox is a heavy three stage helical gear transforming the 40 revolutions of the rotor to the 1500rpm of the generator. This gear is specially designed for for WTN with a gear ratio 1:37.8.

The Nacelle is hot diped galvanised welded beams that support the main shaft. The yaw ring isfitted to the bottom of the frame and this allows connection to the tower.

Close up of the base, a nice quality touch rubber caps to keep the weather off the thread ends.
The control in the tower with the ladder visible and the generation meter in the centre of the photograph.
There is a display mounted in the control panel which monitors Grid Control of Frequency, Overspeed control on rotor that activates disc brake. Vibration sensor, Auto untwist of cable, Thermal relay for yaw, auto stop on worn brake pads, self diagnostic on failure and Auto start-up in the event of grid failure.

This is the view from inside the mast looking up the tower. Note the safety ladder on one side and the cable track on the other.
